Valentine's Day 2012 Event!

This weekend I had the honor of bringing henna to add to the celebration of new life. The baby mama was my friend of old, Valerie, and she wanted something very simple on her belly to commemorate her ninth pregnancy, so chose the constellation nine-star Big Dipper. The attendees of her baby shower were keen on the henna, and I got to decorate moms, teens, kids, dads, and even a grandma or two. Though I forgot my camera at home, my trusty cell phone captured the few shaky images here. It was wonderful to be involved in the celebration, many blessings to Valerie, Michael, the little miracle soon to arrive and the whole family!

I was welcomed into the home of Andrea and her husband and young daughter so I could decorate the girls with henna. Andrea had put a lot of thought into what she wanted incorporated, and it was a very meaningful session. Lots of happiness and many blessings to this beautiful family!

Had a fun time slinging henna for Cindy's Creative Celebrations at a Medtronic Asian Resources Group tonight. There was awesome enthusiasm for the henna, great dancing and music and good food. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing henna with those to whom it was new, having pictures taken, meeting young ones and lots of Medtronic employees and family members. Thanks!

Decorating a drum with henna...

I've been slowly working on my very first henna'ed drum for my wonderful friend/client/promoter, Carrie. Months ago, we met and she gave me lots of ideas based on other artwork she'd seen, and from there we brainstormed lots of new ideas. I played around with measurements and sketches and eventually submitted a couple designs. After a few tweaks I had the design to work from. And then it took a while to summon the courage to actually begin. Once I did, I worked on it here and there whenever I could eke out the time. Now we wait for the henna to be fully absorbed, and I will post photos of the end result when available. It's a fun but lengthy process, but I think worth it in the end.

I had the honor of giving henna for a very happy celebration last evening: Sharrise's bridal shower hosted by her Aunt Imo in her lovely home. It was such a blast, those ladies know how to have FUN!! Had a really wonderful day yesterday! I was privileged to give mehndi to a bride and her family members as part of her wedding celebration. I was taken very good care of, given two DELICIOUS meals, snacks, sweets, chai and lots of beverages in the hours I spent giving mehndi, listening to, watching and even joining in the dancing, karaoeke and very warm and festive party. Many thanks to Neha and her groom and the gracious hosts and the whole lovely group!!

Kath and Moe's 20th Annual Ladies Night Out

Last night was a wonderful event in Plymouth where I got to do some henna at the kitchen counter :). A giving couple opens their gorgeous home every year to droves of women who set up shop giving massages, cutting hair, selling jewelry, scarves, mittens, handbags (or henna designs as the case may be), and a raffle is held to benefit a charity. This year the proceeds go to a great organization whose name I didn't catch which helps to ease the finanacial burden for people going through cancer. The atmosphere is very lively and fun, the table is laden with goodies of all kinds, and the bar is fully stocked. It was a blast, and I'm looking forward to partaking in this annual tradition again and again! Thanks to Kath and Moe!

Henna has brought many wonderful people into my awareness that I otherwise might not have been blessed to discover. Friendships, artistic inspiration, and a fulfillingly broad variety of community network connections have sprung from this art in surprising and very happy ways. A recent for instance is this: I was invited to participate in the Artisan Holiday Boutique in Excelsior, MN November 19 and December 4 and because of that became known to an amazing area artist and she to me. It was a privilege to be invited to meet the bride and her bridesmaids and family in their posh hotel suite last evening, to pamper their feet with henna into the wee hours. There were tears and laughter and the evening is a special memory I'll treasure.

A beautiful expectant mother...

It was my great privilege to do prenatal henna this weekend. It was a home filled with light and warmth and two beautiful, tow-headed little boys curious about what was happening on Mama's tummy. It seems to me the baby inside reacts to the henna, senses something unusual is happening, moves and stretches where I am working exactly. It's so exciting and nurturing and... Words fail. Many blessings to Erin and baby and family for a smooth arrival and happy adjustment period to their wider circle of love!

Last night I had the privilege of attending HugoStock. This is an awesome event put on by Tamara Carlson and Thomas O'Connor in their backyard. They hosted six bands, brought in food and vendors (I got to do henna), and friends and family and about 200 others. What an amazing venue! I'm so impressed with the bands and the hosts and the whole party. I would love to go back!

40th Birthday Henna

So, I'm soon to turn 40 years old. I'm a mom of 4, one of whom has reached the teens, so I guess this is a fitting age for me to be. In this my 40th year, I have been gifted with an art form that makes me happy to practice, plus brings in a little income and introduces me to all sorts of wonderful people. I have a precious family and good friends... So much to be thankful for!!

I decided to take my time and create a palm design for myself for my birthday this year. I remembered a gorgeous birthday self design by Darcy Vasudev I tried to mimic when I was brand new to henna (check out the attempt from 7 months ago here) and I decided to use it as inspiration again. I only glanced at it some hours before I sat down to do my own palm, and was not trying to mimic this go around. I see improvement from the first try, and I see areas to improve. Now that I look at the original, I almost don't even need to cite the inspiration because it looks NOTHING like it :). But it was fun, and I definitely got into the right brain!

Here's to the next 40!Paste just off. It's two tone because it was applied in two phases. Kinda wish it would keep that!

Today I had the extreme privilege of giving henna to an expectant mother. As we sat surrounded by her family and dear friends, her adorable 4 year-old son and husband preparing a gourmet feast in the nearby kitchen, it was my honor to sit for an hour intimately close to this precious being soon to appear, and to the mother who will nurture her or him through life. Baby stretched and moved and kicked, Mom tried hard not to laugh or even talk too much while she took in and sent out blessings and poems and gifts and music as we created a rendition of the Tree of Life on her beautiful belly. I am very moved by the whole experience! Thank you, Stacy, and many blessings to you in the weeks and months ahead! And many thanks to Victoria for connecting us!

Women's Expo Tonight

I had a marvelous time at Yoga Bella in Chanhassen, MN tonight. It's a really beautiful yoga studio and I would love to go there some time with my yoga devotee sister, Sarah, but I wasn't there for the sun salute or shavasana. I got to be part of a Women's Boutique and Expo held there and at the neighboring upscale Salon Essence. I loved sharing this experience with so many women and artisans and they were in to the henna!
